Introduction

Mr. Samuel Tobbin, the founder and Executive Chairman of Tobinco Group of Companies, recently shared his remarkable entrepreneurial journey on The Point of View TV programme, hosted by Bernard Avle on Channel One TV.

Starting with just one small chemical shop, Tobbin has built a business empire comprising 13 thriving companies across various sectors.

His story is one of resilience, strategic thinking, and unwavering determination.

Building a Business Empire

During the interview, Mr. Tobbin recounted how he began his entrepreneurial journey by hawking on the streets of Accra, selling books and other items before venturing into the pharmaceutical industry. “I started by hawking things like books and other things on the streets of Accra,” he shared.

His foray into pharmaceuticals began after a five-year stint in Tokyo, Japan, where he hustled to make ends meet.

Upon returning to Ghana in 1994, he opened a small chemical shop in Dakuma, marking the beginning of his business career.

Over the years, that single shop expanded into the Tobinco Group, which now boasts a diverse portfolio of companies.

“The mother company is Tobinco, which is barely about 35 years,” Tobbin explained.

Today, his group includes ABI National Bank, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals, Entrance University Hospital, Entrance University School of Science and Technology, and several other companies spanning banking, insurance, real estate, and media.

The Breakthrough

Tobbin’s breakthrough came in the year 2000 when he decided to venture into importing pharmaceuticals from India. “By the year 2000, I had two pharmacy shops and one chemical shop,” he recalled.

That same year, he travelled to India to establish business relationships, a move that proved pivotal. “I sold my electrical shop at Opera Square and everything in it to fund my trip to India,” Tobbin said.

This decision opened doors to new opportunities, leading to the expansion of his pharmaceutical business.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite the successes, Tobbin’s journey has not been without challenges. In 2013, Tobinco Pharmaceuticals faced significant scrutiny from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), which thrust the company into the public eye.

However, Tobbin’s resilience and commitment to his vision helped him navigate this difficult period, emerging stronger and more determined.

Conclusion

Samuel Tobbin’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, vision, and strategic risk-taking.

From hawking on the streets to leading a conglomerate of 13 companies, his journey is an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs.

As he continues to expand his business empire, Tobbin remains a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
