Questions of Life: Am I On Course?

Progress is intentional and measurable through milestones, fostering confidence and fulfillment. Reflecting on achievements keeps one on course toward personal and broader goals.

“Progress must be actual, factual, and intentional.”

A vision can be defined as a series of connected milestones or goals that guide us towards achieving a desired outcome. One key way to ensure you are on the right path is by measuring these milestones. For example, if you’re traveling from point A to point E, the best way to gauge progress is by checking your position at points B, C, and D. Even though point E represents the ultimate vision, your ability to monitor your journey through these intermediate stages is how you can tell you’re on course in life.

Let’s make it personal. Years ago, when I used to write daily on Facebook, I one day set a goal to write and publish articles on my Facebook wall every day. To track my progress, I don’t just wait until the end of the month. Instead, I measure success by checking whether I have written a substantial number of articles each week and whether I have posted them. Progress, as I’ve come to realize, isn’t accidental. It’s something deliberate and intentional. As I’ve said, “Progress must be actual, factual, and intentional.”

There are two key things to know about progress: First, it brings confidence. Each small step forward, when measured, builds the assurance that you are moving closer to your goals. Second, progress breeds fulfillment. When you’re making headway, life feels meaningful, and your sense of purpose is affirmed.

When progress isn’t felt, however, life becomes frustrating. This holds true not just for individuals but for companies and nations alike. Progress is the master key to growth. I take inspiration from American motivational speaker Tony Robbins, who once said, “Progress comes when we take massive action.”

Action Plan: Decide today to take measurable steps toward your goals. Break your vision into smaller milestones, track your progress, and regularly reflect on whether you’re advancing. Don’t hesitate to step into new, challenging opportunities, as progress often lies in the undiscovered paths.
