Gake Selete Nyomi was a remarkable individual whose life was characterised by passion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his faith, family, and community. 

Born on May 11, 1959, in Anum-Boso, Eastern Region of Ghana, Selete’s journey through life was one of continuous growth, innovation, and service to others. His impact was felt far beyond his hometown of Cape Coast, reaching across Ghana and even internationally. 

This biography aims to capture the essence of Selete’s life, his numerous accomplishments, and the profound legacy he left behind.

Early Life and Education

Gake Selete Kodjo Nyomi was born to Mr. Cornelius Kofi Nyomi and Mrs. Victoria Nyomi, both from Anloga in the Volta Region of Ghana. He spent his early years in Peki Dzake, Jasikan before beginning his formal education at Achimota School in 1965. 

Selete’s time at Achimota, both in the primary and secondary divisions, laid the foundation for his love of African culture, drama, languages, and community development.

After completing his O-levels at Achimota, Selete attended Mfantsipim School for his sixth form education. He then continued his academic journey at the University of Cape Coast, further honing his skills and expanding his knowledge base.

Career and Entrepreneurship

Selete’s professional life was marked by diversity and innovation. His teaching career began at Commander Training College (now Commander College of Education) during a period when universities were closed in Ghana. 

He went on to teach at several renowned schools in Cape Coast, including Adisadel College (1982-84) and St. Augustine College (1984-93), where he served in various capacities including head of the language department.

During challenging economic times in the early 1980s, Selete demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by selling ‘kose’ (a local snack) to over 1,000 students and producing soft drink concentrates. His wife, Gifty, supported these ventures by expanding the market for their products.

In 1993, Selete founded the Agoro/CILTAD project in Cape Coast, a significant initiative that provided young people with opportunities to develop their talents in music, dance, and drama. 

The Agro group performed extensively in Ghana and abroad, winning three awards from the Ghana Tourism Board for its role in developing cultural tourism in the central region.

Selete’s innovative efforts extended to technology and infrastructure. In 2002, he established Cape Coast’s first broadband Internet project and introduced the first mobile internet service in Ghana. Together with his wife, he also founded the first driving school in Cape Coast.

Media and Community Development

In 2007, Selete and Gifty launched Coastal TV, the first television station in Cape Coast and the first community TV station in Ghana. This venture became a vital training ground for many individuals who later pursued careers in broadcasting.

Selete’s leadership extended to various community organizations. He served as the original chairman of the Ghana Red Cross Society and chaired the Central Region Branch of the Eurasian Union of Ghana. He also became the chairman of the Ghana Community Radio Network, advocating for community-centered broadcasting.

Throughout his career, Selete held numerous appointments and played consultancy roles in various projects, participating in workshops, seminars, and conferences around the world where he shared his expertise in cultural development and education.

Faith and Family Life

Selete Nyomi was a devoted Christian who became an active disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ in his adulthood. He was a member of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) from its inception and served as a deacon in the Cape Coast congregation.

His faith informed every aspect of his life, including his family life. Together with his wife Gifty, whom he married on September 10, 1983, Selete raised four children. They maintained a vibrant family devotional life and instituted an annual family prayer retreat that lasted for decades.

Awards and Recognition

Selete’s work and contributions to society were recognized with numerous awards. These included honors from the Ghana Tourism Board, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Ministry of Environment. 

In 2016, he was honored by Conservation International in Hawaii as West Africa’s Hotspot Hero for his innovative use of music, dance, drama, and film in conserving the Kakum Rainforest. In January 2023, he received the Osaberima Award for being a pacesetter in media, communication, and entertainment.

Legacy and Final Days

Selete Nyomi’s community service and philanthropic efforts were extensive, often partnering with international organizations to bring significant development to Cape Coast and beyond. In 2022, he established the Central Alumni Foundation, galvanizing alumni from schools in the central region to give back to their communities.

Selete passed away on July 6, 2024, leaving behind his wife, Gifty Nyomi, their four children, and seven grandchildren. His sudden departure was a shock to many, but the impact of his life continues to resonate through the numerous lives he touched and the institutions he helped build.
