Introduction
Ernest Bediako Sampong is one of Ghana’s most successful and respected entrepreneurs, having built Ernest Chemists Limited from a single pharmacy shop into one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in West Africa.
His journey from humble beginnings to leading a multimillion-dollar enterprise exemplifies the power of vision, hard work, and ethical business practices.
This profile examines Sampong’s background, the growth of Ernest Chemists, his business philosophy, and his impact on Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry.
Early Life and Education

Born in 1956, Ernest Bediako Sampong grew up in a trading family that instilled entrepreneurial values from a young age.
As he recalls, “As part of the Kwahu culture, parents and relatives want their children to go through a ‘training program in trading’. That’s why during my primary school days, we used to go around Accra selling medicine such as APC, Paracetamol and Aspirin and also things like paper bags”. This early exposure to commerce laid the foundation for his future business success.
Sampong attended the prestigious Adisadel College for his secondary education, where he excelled academically. A former classmate remembers, “Academically, he was the best student who went to ‘Adisco’”.
After briefly studying medicine at the University of Ghana, Sampong transferred to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to pursue pharmacy. This shift would prove pivotal in shaping his career path.
Founding of Ernest Chemists

In 1986, while doing his national service at the Ministry of Health, Sampong opened his first pharmacy shop in Kaneshie, Accra. As he explains,
“I started my shop in 1986 when I was doing my national service at the pharmacy division of the Ministry of Health. I identified certain opportunities there because that office was where the license and permit for importation were prepared.”
From this single outlet, Sampong steadily expanded the business. He recalls, “In less than two years, a second shop was opened in Okaishie”.
Through hard work and strategic growth, Ernest Chemists evolved from a small retail operation into a major pharmaceutical distributor and manufacturer.
Growth and Expansion

A key turning point came in the late 1990s when currency depreciation threatened the viability of Ernest Chemists’ import-focused model. Sampong made the pivotal decision to move into manufacturing. As he explains:
“After some years in business, the 1998 massive depreciation of the cedi to the dollar also led to the increasing cost of importation in Ghana. At that time, the mainline of business for Ernest Chemists was the importation of pharmaceutical products. Prices of pharmaceutical products became high which led to the loss of market share as consumers within the lower economic bracket – who form the majority of the market, could not afford the products. It was at this point that a very important decision which has been the main factor for the growth of Ernest Chemists Limited was made. The Management of the company decided to do backward integration, and that was to start the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. Manufacturing started in 2001 and through this, Ernest Chemists Limited has been able to meet the pharmaceutical needs of all segments of the market with affordable medicine.”
This strategic pivot allowed Ernest Chemists to better control costs and serve a broader market. The company has since grown into a pharmaceutical powerhouse with over 40 retail and wholesale branches across Ghana. It also exports to other West African countries and has opened a subsidiary in Sierra Leone.
Business Philosophy and Leadership Style

Sampong attributes his success to several key principles:
- Honesty and integrity: “It’s very important that we are very honest in whatever we do. I mean, we should be patient. We should be focused.”
- Financial discipline: “Whatever comes in, you’re very careful with how you spend, because these days you find, I mean, the young guys, I mean, I mean, they make something little instead of reinvesting it in applying back into it, they begin to have fun with them”
- Patience and persistence: “I’ve always said that, I mean, it’s always possible. Because most people think that, look, from nowhere, you can’t get to somewhere, you know? It’s possible”
- Humility: Employees consistently describe Sampong as down-to-earth and approachable despite his success. One notes, “If you are not told he’s the CEO, you wouldn’t know because his personal relations with us are just superb”.

Ernest Bediako Sampong has made significant contributions to Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector and economy at large. The company employs over 650 people and its manufacturing operations help reduce reliance on imports.
Mr. Sampong has won numerous awards, including CIMG Marketing Man of the Year and the EMY Africa Man of the Year award in 2020.
Beyond business, Sampong is committed to corporate social responsibility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ernest Chemists donated to isolation facilities and the national COVID-19 Trust Fund. The company also supports various health initiatives and causes.
Looking to the Future

At 68 years old, Sampong is focused on ensuring Ernest Chemists’ long-term success. He has involved his children in the business from a young age, grooming the next generation of leadership. His son, Yaw Bediako Sampong, now serves as General Manager.
The company continues to expand, with plans for a new $50 million manufacturing facility. As Sampong explains,
“Our vision has always been to be among the top indigenous pharmaceutical companies in Africa. Now, we’re not looking at the next few years or whatever, you know, we’re looking at the next 10 years”.
