Introduction

Patricia Poku-Diaby, often referred to as the “Cocoa Queen of Ghana,” is a Ghanaian businesswoman and industrialist who has made an indelible mark on the global cocoa industry. As the founder and CEO of Plot Enterprise Ghana Limited, her entrepreneurial journey is both inspiring and groundbreaking.

In 2015, she became the richest woman in Ghana, with a staggering net worth of $720 million, ranking her among the top wealthiest individuals in the country. Her rise to prominence in the male-dominated cocoa industry is a testament to her business acumen, determination, and resilience.

This is the story of Patricia Poku-Diaby’s entrepreneurial journey from humble beginnings to global recognition.

Early Life and Family Background

Born into a prominent business family, Patricia Poku-Diaby was one of 18 children of the renowned Ghanaian entrepreneur Francis Kojo Poku.

Her father was a successful businessman with interests in pharmaceuticals, timber, and transportation, making a significant impact on Ghana’s economic landscape.

Despite facing political exile, Francis Kojo Poku remained a key figure in Ghana’s commerce, inspiring his children to follow in his footsteps.

Growing up in such an entrepreneurial environment, Patricia was immersed in the world of business from an early age. She honed her skills while working in her family’s transportation and trading business, gaining valuable experience in various sectors.

This foundation would later propel her to launch her own ventures, following the family tradition of innovation and economic contribution.

Founding of Plot Enterprise

Patricia Poku-Diaby’s entrepreneurial journey began when she founded Plot Enterprise Group, a commodities trading company. Plot Enterprise initially started operations in Ivory Coast, focusing on cocoa, cashew nuts, and wood products.

After gaining a foothold in the Ivorian market, she expanded the business to Ghana, where she established Plot Enterprise Ghana Limited.

Her decision to branch out into cocoa processing proved to be a game-changer. Plot Enterprise Ghana, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, was set up as a Free Zones entity. In 2010, the company commissioned a state-of-the-art cocoa processing plant in Takoradi, with a production capacity of 32,000 metric tons of cocoa beans annually.

This $90 million facility processes cocoa into liquor, butter, and cake, positioning Plot Enterprise as a major player in the global cocoa market. The company’s products are exported to key markets in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

A Visionary Leader in the Cocoa Industry

Patricia Poku-Diaby’s success in the cocoa industry is not only remarkable but also groundbreaking, as she became the first woman in Africa to establish a large-scale cocoa processing facility.

Her leadership of Plot Enterprise Ghana has solidified her reputation as a visionary entrepreneur with a deep understanding of global trade dynamics.

Under her stewardship, Plot Enterprise Ghana has grown into one of the most successful cocoa processing companies in the country, employing over 600 staff and generating annual revenues exceeding $50 million.

The company’s influence extends beyond Ghana, with its subsidiaries—Plot Commodities and Plot Enterprise Ivory Coast—establishing a strong presence in West Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Challenges and Resilience

Like many successful entrepreneurs, Patricia Poku-Diaby’s journey has not been without its challenges. In 2015, her company faced a significant setback when Ghana’s COCOBOD accused Plot Enterprise of owing $26.7 million in unsettled debts.

Despite this controversy, Patricia remained steadfast in her resolve, navigating the difficult situation with grace and resilience. The issues were quietly resolved, and her business continued to thrive.

Her ability to overcome such obstacles is a testament to her strong leadership and strategic thinking. She has demonstrated time and again that challenges are merely stepping stones on the path to greater success.

Expansion and Diversification

Beyond cocoa processing, Patricia Poku-Diaby has diversified her business interests. Plot Enterprise’s expansion into other commodities such as cotton and cashew nuts further solidified its position as a multinational firm with diversified revenue streams.

The group operates under three main arms—Plot Commodities, Plot Enterprise Ivory Coast, and Plot Enterprise Ghana—serving clients across West Africa, Europe, the United States, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

In recent years, Patricia has also ventured into mesofinance, a sector that focuses on financing small and medium-sized enterprises. In partnership with former Banque Atlantique executive Bintou Bayo, she co-founded Innov Finances, a company that aims to provide tailored financial solutions to growing businesses.

Recognition and Influence

Despite her business achievements, Patricia Poku-Diaby maintains a relatively low profile. She is not one to seek the limelight, preferring to let her work speak for itself.

However, her success has not gone unnoticed. In 2015, she was listed as the eighth richest Ghanaian and the richest woman in the country by Goodman AMC’s ‘The Ghana Wealth Report.’

That same year, she was honored as the Woman of the Year at the prestigious EMY Awards, further cementing her status as a leading figure in Ghana’s business community.

Conclusion

Patricia Poku-Diaby’s entrepreneurial journey is a story of vision, determination, and resilience. From her early days in her family’s business to founding and leading Plot Enterprise, she has broken barriers and redefined success in the cocoa industry.

As Ghana’s richest woman, her legacy extends far beyond her wealth. She has become a role model for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, demonstrating that with the right mindset and hard work, it is possible to succeed in even the most competitive industries.

Through her quiet yet impactful leadership, Patricia Poku-Diaby continues to shape the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry and inspire the next generation of African business leaders.

Her story is one of triumph against the odds and a reminder that true success is built on vision, integrity, and perseverance.
