Introduction

Isaac Sesi, an electrical engineer turned agri-tech innovator, is transforming Ghana’s agriculture sector through his company, Sesi Technologies.

With a passion for leveraging technology to tackle real-world challenges, Sesi has created innovative solutions that are empowering farmers and enhancing food security in Ghana.

His flagship product, GrainMate, a moisture-detecting device, is making a tangible difference in the lives of smallholder farmers by helping them maintain crop quality and prevent post-harvest losses.

The Journey to Agri-Tech

Isaac Sesi’s journey into agri-tech was unexpected yet impactful. Initially focused on electrical engineering, Sesi’s interest in agriculture grew during his time at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he worked as a research engineer in agricultural biosystems.

Reflecting on his decision to enter agri-tech, Sesi explained, “I wanted to do something in technology, but I wasn’t sure what the application would be.” His research project led to the development of a grain moisture meter, which inspired him to continue creating accessible technology solutions for agriculture.

“I was convinced that there was a future with this,” he shared, noting that the device had the potential to be commercialized and provide real value to local farmers.

Building Sesi Technologies

Founded in 2018, Sesi Technologies focuses on using technology to address challenges in agriculture. GrainMate, the company’s grain moisture meter, has been particularly successful among smallholder farmers.

With over 5,000 users, GrainMate helps farmers determine when their grains are sufficiently dry for storage, protecting them from mold, pests, and financial losses. “For these smallholder farmers, just being able to have the peace of mind knowing that their grains are safe…gives them so much peace of mind,” Sesi noted.

He explained that many farmers struggle with post-harvest issues like weevil infestations and mold, which affect their income. By enabling farmers to monitor moisture levels, GrainMate prevents such issues, thereby helping farmers improve their product quality and profitability.

Impact on the Community

Sesi Technologies has received positive feedback from its users, with smallholder farmers appreciating how the device simplifies their work. Although initially skeptical, many farmers quickly saw the benefits. “When you explain to them what the device does, they appreciate it and they appreciate the value,” said Sesi.

His innovation has not only aided Ghanaian farmers but also served as a source of inspiration for young people interested in agri-tech. “Over the last four or five years…we have served as inspiration for other agri-tech companies that have come up,” he added.

Encouraging a New Perspective on Agriculture

Sesi advocates for a shift in perspective regarding agriculture, encouraging young people to see it as a viable business rather than merely a means of livelihood.

“There are so many opportunities in the field of agriculture,” he explained, highlighting the vast potential for young professionals to make impactful contributions in the sector.

He believes that combining agriculture with technology offers promising career opportunities for young people from various fields, urging them to explore the untapped potential of agri-tech.

Conclusion

Isaac Sesi’s work with Sesi Technologies exemplifies the power of innovation in addressing pressing issues within Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Through GrainMate and other initiatives, he is helping farmers improve productivity and financial stability while inspiring a new generation to consider agriculture as a field for technological advancements. Looking forward, Sesi remains optimistic about the future of agri-tech, stating, “We’re only scratching the surface of what is possible.”

With pioneers like Sesi leading the way, the future of agriculture in Ghana and beyond appears bright, promising increased food security and economic growth for farming communities.
