The founder of Pizzaman–Chickenman, Christian Boakye, has opened up about the painful and chaotic early days of his entrepreneurial journey—long before he built one of Ghana’s fastest-growing food chains. He made the revelations during an interview on the Masterminds Podcast, hosted by Richie Mensah.
Chris B recalled moments of fear, shame, financial crisis, and even police encounters. “As a final-year student… you’ve burnt investment worth over two hundred thousand… At 6 a.m. that morning I heard the knock on my door—three policemen,” he said, recounting how a failed event cost him heavily and plunged him deep into debt.

He shared the heartbreak of losing a friend’s Corolla S, which had been used as collateral for a GHS12,000 loan. “He actually sold the car… I remember I cried,” he said. The pressure from family and creditors nearly crushed him.
Yet, in the middle of the chaos, the seed of his food empire began—inside a student room. “Man has to survive… I started selling pizza in boxes. We sold 45 boxes on the first day,” he revealed. That small spark would grow into a national business.
Even pitching to investors came with struggles. “We didn’t have a laptop… I had to borrow one from my niece,” Chris said. But that borrowed laptop opened the door to a partnership with Quick Angels, which powered the expansion that now boasts over 90 branches and more than 1,600 employees.
With humility and grit, he reflected: “The stress became more after success… but stay hungry, stay foolish. Never have an arrival mentality.”
