Once you know what you have, the next step is figuring out how to use it—otherwise, your discovery is pointless. I know people with incredible talents who have no idea how to utilise them. Take my own brother, for example. He played football alongside Michael Essien during their elementary school days, yet he couldn’t elevate his talent to the level where Essien is now earning millions per week.
This overarching question breaks down into more specific inquiries. For instance, you might ask: When and where do I start? I recall reading a book by Ghanaian trainers and authors Albert and Comfort Ocran that completely transformed my mindset about using my gifts. They emphasised the importance of starting from humble beginnings. This simple idea profoundly impacted my writing talent. While at university, I began writing and posting my work on notice boards and getting published in magazines. The key is to start small, wherever you are.
It’s been said that confidence is a function of competence, and competence develops when talented individuals take action and get the work done. Before I started writing in small, accessible places, I lacked the confidence to aim for magazines and newspapers. Today, I challenge you to put your talent to work. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your confidence and competence grow.
