Penelope Brooke Thompson has advised young professionals to embrace every opportunity, solve problems aggressively, and become known for integrity if they want to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
Speaking on the Peswa Podcast, Penelope reflected on her rise from struggling job seeker to executive leader and founder.
“The first thing, I don’t think I said no to anything,” she revealed. “If I saw a problem, I solved it.”
According to her, many of the companies she worked with trusted her because she consistently delivered results and handled responsibilities beyond her official role.
“I could be doing project management, HR, legal, operations — everything,” she explained. “Once you execute the first task well, people begin to see you as the doer.”
Penelope also stressed the importance of personal reputation and values.
“Be known for something good,” she advised. “There are certain things people know they can’t bring to me.”
The ACTT founder said her willingness to challenge broken systems and improve processes helped her rise quickly into executive leadership positions, including Chief Operating Officer roles.
She encouraged young Africans to maximize every learning opportunity regardless of their educational background or current circumstances.
“Take advantage of every good opportunity,” she said. “Everything I learned — economics, technology, operations — all came together for the work I’m doing now.”
Her comments have resonated strongly with many young professionals navigating uncertain career paths in Africa’s changing economy.
