Fashion entrepreneur Sarah Boadu has cautioned young creatives against the temptation to imitate successful competitors, insisting that authenticity is one of the greatest competitive advantages in business. She shared the advice on Springboard Hangout, a programme by the Springboard Road Show Foundation, hosted by Comfort Ocran on the topic “Building Beyond Talent.”

Reflecting on her own journey, Sarah admitted that there was a period when she became influenced by trends and unconsciously began copying other designers instead of expressing her unique style. “I stopped loving my work because I was imitating,” she confessed. “Just be yourself… It’s the easiest thing you can do.”

She explained that once she returned to designing according to her own convictions rather than social media trends, customers who appreciated her originality naturally found her. “There’s an authenticity that people can feel,” she said, adding that originality attracts the right audience far better than imitation.

Sarah also advised entrepreneurs to understand both themselves and their customers. “Know your market and know yourself,” she emphasized, encouraging creatives to conduct proper market research instead of assuming customers want what competitors are producing.

Her message serves as a timely reminder that sustainable brands are built on authenticity, not imitation. Long-term influence comes from solving problems with originality while remaining faithful to one’s purpose and identity.
