Leadership coach and social entrepreneur Yawa Hansen-Quao has encouraged professionals to become intentional readers, recommending six influential books that she credits with transforming her leadership, emotional intelligence and relationship-building skills.

Speaking on Springboard Virtual University with host Pastor Albert Ocran, Hansen-Quao explained that while reading alone cannot guarantee success, the right books can build the self-awareness and interpersonal skills that many professionals overlook.

Among her top recommendations were The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, Why You Do What You Do by Tim LaHaye, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, Who’s Got Your Back and Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

She noted that Who’s Got Your Back helped her intentionally map important relationships, while Never Eat Alone taught her how to maintain meaningful connections instead of simply making new acquaintances.

“A lot of us are good at initiating relationships but not maintaining them,” Hansen-Quao observed.

She shared practical examples of sending thoughtful articles, checking in periodically and making valuable introductions as simple ways to strengthen relationships over time.

Pastor Albert Ocran praised the recommendations, encouraging viewers to invest in the books because “an investment in your learning will expand you and stretch you.”

Hansen-Quao stressed that reading should always lead to action. Knowledge without behavioural change, she argued, produces little value. Instead, professionals should apply the principles they learn by becoming more intentional communicators, better listeners and more generous relationship builders.

Her recommendations underscored the importance of continuous learning in a rapidly changing world where leadership success increasingly depends on influence, emotional intelligence and authentic human connections.
