At a recent interview on the Perswa Podcast at The Hive, Yoofi Otabil, CEO and founder of The Hive, opened up about one of the most defining parenting experiences he learned from his father, Pastor Mensa Otabil—an experience centered on trust, responsibility, and personal growth.
Recounting a moment from his high school years, Yoofi described how he once asked his father for permission to attend a party. Instead of setting strict rules, his father responded in a way that left a lasting impression. “I asked him, ‘What time can I be back home?’ and he said, ‘You can come back home when you feel like it’s a good time,’” Yoofi recalled.
According to Yoofi, this moment was more than just permission—it was a transfer of responsibility. “He was saying, ‘I trust you to do the thing that I’ve taught you to do for so many years… I trust you to come home at a respectable time,’” he explained.
The experience shaped his understanding of parenting, particularly the balance between guidance and independence. He noted that such trust would have been inappropriate at a younger age, but at that stage, it was intentional. “At that moment, he’s like, ‘I’ve done enough. And I trust that you’re going to make the right choice,’” Yoofi added.
Now a father himself, Yoofi says he applies the same principle with his children—giving them space to make decisions while remaining present to guide them. The lesson, he emphasized, is clear: great parenting is not just about control, but about raising responsible individuals who can think and act wisely on their own.
