In a bold and controversial statement, real estate entrepreneur Ebenezer Kwadwo Saka Addo-Mensah has challenged Ghanaian youth to rethink their approach to employment, urging them to prioritize income generation over prestige.
Speaking on the Konnected Minds Podcast hosted by Derrick Abaitey, the Saka Homes founder declared, “You should drop the certificate from university and go and sell kelewele… I need money. If it’s kelewele, I’ll sell to get the money.”
His comments come amid growing frustration among young graduates struggling to find jobs. Saka emphasized that education should not limit creativity but rather enhance it. According to him, “The university is to give you sense to do the kelewele… do things better.”
Drawing from personal experience, he recounted how he started his entrepreneurial journey selling tanker water while holding a university degree. Despite facing embarrassment and criticism, he persisted, eventually building multiple successful businesses.
Saka argues that many young people fail not because of lack of opportunities, but due to unwillingness to start small. He stressed that consistent effort in simple ventures like street trading can generate significant income if approached strategically.
The businessman also criticized the traditional mindset of seeking white-collar jobs, encouraging youth to focus on building wealth through practical ventures.
His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many debating whether academic qualifications are becoming less relevant in today’s economic climate.
